The Ugandan government is preparing to welcome the inaugural group of 265 nationals returning from South Africa under a new voluntary repatriation initiative. The first flight, carrying these returning citizens, is expected to land at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday evening.
This operation signifies the initial phase of a larger government plan to facilitate the return of Ugandans residing in South Africa who wish to come back home. The entire process is fully funded by the state, following a directive from President Yoweri Museveni.
Over 700 Ugandans have already registered their interest in returning. Future charter flights will be organized to accommodate the remaining individuals who have signed up for this program. The government has assured that all costs associated with this voluntary return will be covered.
Minister of State for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, expressed gratitude to the various entities and individuals involved in the coordination. He specifically thanked government agencies, the Ugandan High Commission in Pretoria, Uganda Airlines, and community leaders in South Africa for their efforts.
Byamukama stated that this exercise underscores the government’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens abroad. The voluntary program is designed for Ugandans in South Africa facing difficulties or simply choosing to return, with the government providing comprehensive logistical and financial support.
Further repatriation phases are planned for the upcoming weeks, contingent on the number of registered returnees and logistical considerations. This initiative also highlights the role of Uganda Airlines in supporting national programs and government operations. The repatriation is part of ongoing consular and diplomatic efforts to assist and protect Ugandans living in the diaspora.
