The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has arrested eight senior officials from Uganda’s Parliament as part of an expanding corruption investigation. Among those detained is Chris Obore, the Director of Communication and Public Affairs, alongside the Director of Human Resources, Daniel Adilo, and the executive secretary in the Office of the Speaker, Leonard Okema.
Other officials arrested include Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu (principal research officer), Emmanuel Emuron Okwi (principal protocol officer), Stella Itute (personal assistant), Vincent Otebata (capacity development officer), and Methods Murebe, the chief executive of the Uganda Parliamentary Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO).
The arrests, which took place on Thursday, are a significant development in the IGG’s probe into the alleged misuse of public funds and abuse of office within Parliament’s administration. These investigations reportedly intensified following the end of former Speaker Anita Among’s tenure in May 2026.
Sources indicate that the officials were initially invited to provide statements at the IGG headquarters but were subsequently arrested after questioning. They are expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court.
While specific charges are yet to be officially disclosed, the investigation is understood to focus on the mismanagement of public resources and the handling of funds within Parliament. This follows weeks of officials reporting to the IGG to account for alleged fund withdrawals and utilization.
Searches have also been conducted at former Speaker Anita Among’s residences and former office, though she has not been arrested. The IGG’s widening net signals a move beyond political leadership to encompass senior administrative and technical staff, potentially increasing scrutiny on the Parliament’s financial dealings.
