Finance Minister Henry Musasizi has firmly stated that public officials can build personal wealth through honest means, directly challenging the notion that illicit enrichment is the only path to financial prosperity. Speaking at the launch of Makerere University’s Strategic Plan 2025–2030, Musasizi implored leaders to resist the temptation of corruption, asserting that personal fortunes need not be built on the back of stolen public funds.

He highlighted the detrimental impact of corruption on Uganda’s ability to fund essential public services, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The minister noted that significant sums are lost annually due to embezzlement, often by individuals who already possess sufficient means.

Musasizi shared his long-held conviction, forged during his time on Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, that ethical conduct and hard work are the cornerstones of genuine financial success. “I have always maintained that you can become wealthy without stealing public money,” he declared.

As a politically exposed person, Musasizi added, he is obligated to account for the sources of any funds he possesses, making illicit gains untenable. He urged those in public office to serve with unwavering integrity and remain accountable to the citizenry.

The minister also called upon Makerere University to intensify its efforts in instilling ethical values among students, emphasizing the institution’s crucial role in shaping future leaders who will uphold accountability and reject corruption throughout their careers.

Musasizi pledged to fulfill the responsibilities of his new role as Finance Minister with diligence, stating that true leadership is defined by responsibility, integrity, and accountability, rather than age. He extended gratitude to the Makerere University community for their support during his election and subsequent cabinet appointment, recognizing the impact of alumni on the university’s global reputation.
