Operations at Kisoro Municipal Council were brought to a halt on Thursday as a group of truck drivers staged a protest, blocking the main entrance.

The demonstration was sparked by a dispute over a contract for collecting transport taxes, which the drivers claimed was awarded to an individual outside their association without proper procedure.

Members of the Kisoro Transporters Association parked their vehicles at the council gate, expressing strong opposition to the new arrangement. They stated that the person who had been awarded the contract was unknown to them and had not applied through their association, which has been responsible for collecting these taxes since 2017.

“We will not pay taxes to a person we don’t know. He has no truck and is not one of us,” the drivers asserted, highlighting their lack of trust in the new contractor.

Ntamuheza Sipiriyano, chairperson of the Kisoro Transporters Association, echoed the drivers’ concerns, questioning the justification for sidelining his association, given their established track record in revenue collection for the municipality.

The standoff concluded after a meeting between the drivers’ representatives and the Town Clerk, Richard Mugisha. The council subsequently agreed to allow the Kisoro Transporters Association to continue its role in collecting the transport taxes.

Mugisha praised the drivers for their peaceful approach to voicing their concerns. Sipiriyano expressed satisfaction with the resolution and thanked the association members for their unity during the protest.
