Police in Luweero District have issued a stern warning against mob justice, as escalating retaliatory violence linked to land disputes threatens community stability. Recent events highlight a concerning trend of individuals taking the law into their own hands, resulting in the destruction of property and harm to livestock.

Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima reported an incident on June 30, 2026, where approximately 30 cattle and 10 goats were injured at the farm of Erasmus Kigaba in Kaswa Village, Kamira Ward. While police have identified several suspects, including Ssuka Bawona and Ali Kakooza from Namuningi LC1, a manhunt is underway as some may have fled.

Investigators suspect this attack was a reprisal for an earlier incident on June 21, 2026. In that event, Erasmus Kigaba allegedly led a group that destroyed about half an acre of eucalyptus trees belonging to Isa Katende in Namuningi Village, reportedly due to a long-standing land disagreement.

“We strongly discourage members of the public from taking the law into their own hands. Land disputes should be resolved through the established legal processes, not through acts of retaliation that destroy property or injure animals,” stated Twiineamazima. He assured the public that efforts are being made to apprehend all individuals involved in both incidents and bring them to justice.

Luweero Resident District Commissioner Mariam Nalubega echoed these sentiments, urging residents to report disputes to the authorities rather than engaging in vigilantism. “Taking the law into your own hands only creates more conflict and divides communities. I encourage residents to report cases to the police and allow security agencies to handle them within the law,” Nalubega advised.

These warnings come as security agencies investigate a similar case in Nakasongola District, where significant property damage valued at Shs185 million occurred on a farm, further raising concerns about retaliatory violence connected to land disputes across the Savannah Region.
