National Resistance Movement (NRM) Commissioner James Tweheyo is appealing to members in Kayunga District to put aside their differences and foster unity as the Local Council (LC) elections draw near. He cautioned that ongoing internal wrangles could significantly weaken the party’s position and potentially lead to electoral losses.

Speaking at an NRM leaders’ retreat, Tweheyo emphasized the importance of reconciliation and adherence to the party’s constitution to resolve disputes. “The strength of the NRM lies in its unity. If we continue fighting among ourselves instead of reconciling, we risk handing victory to our opponents,” he stated, urging leaders to prioritize party interests.

The call for unity comes in the wake of a leadership vacuum within the NRM in Kayunga, created by the tragic death of the district party chairperson. This has resulted in the emergence of two opposing factions vying for control.

One faction, led by NRM District Vice Chairperson Kato, believes he should continue as acting chairperson based on party procedures until a permanent replacement is selected. Conversely, the other faction, headed by Acting NRM Registrar Augustine Tumwine, is advocating for fresh elections to choose a substantive district chairperson.

This internal conflict risks undermining the NRM’s performance in the district as the campaigns for the lower LC elections gain momentum. Former State Minister for Gender and the Elderly, Sulaiman Madada, also present at the retreat, reminded members that the NRM’s constitution offers clear guidelines for dispute resolution and filling vacancies, urging tolerance and patience.

Leaders at the retreat have committed to facilitating dialogue between the factions to mend the divisions and ensure the NRM presents a united front during the intensifying election campaigns.
