The Makerere University Rugby Grounds buzzed with activity as the Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl and Boy Child (PISGBC) hosted its final exhibition and sports gala for the seventh cohort. Over 5,000 trainees, having completed six months of free vocational training, displayed a diverse array of products and services.

The exhibition highlighted the practical skills gained in fields such as tailoring, carpentry, welding, hairdressing, baking, shoemaking, construction, electrical installation, mechanics, and more. Presiding over the event, Hon. Santa Sandra Alum Ogwang, Minister of State for Economic Monitoring, emphasized the initiative’s role in empowering youth.

“Today’s exhibition is more than just a display of products and talents. It is a demonstration of what can be achieved when our youth are empowered with practical skills, discipline and the confidence to create opportunities for themselves,” Hon. Ogwang stated.

Beyond the displays, a sports gala saw trainees competing, with the Subway Skilling centre clinching the football trophy and Kigowa Skilling centre winning netball. The event underscored the program’s impact on job creation and national development, aligning with Uganda’s Vision 2040.

Trainees shared inspiring success stories, with many speaking about how the program enabled them to overcome challenges like dropping out of school and transform into entrepreneurs. The initiative, championed by President Yoweri Museveni, aims to provide marketable skills, foster self-reliance, and contribute to Uganda’s economic growth.
