Airlines, particularly Ryanair, are issuing stark warnings about significant travel disruptions this summer, attributing the potential “queue chaos” to the European Union’s new Entry-Exit System (EES).
The EES requires non-EU nationals to register biometric data upon entering the Schengen Area, with checks conducted upon departure. Ryanair’s Chief Operations Officer, Neal McMahon, expressed concern that passengers and families are being treated as “guinea pigs” for a system that could lead to long queues, missed flights, and increased stress.
Berlin Airport has already reported instances of non-EU nationals facing queues of up to two hours, with Aletta von Massenbach, the airport’s head, describing the situation as “not bearable over the summer.” Several major airports, including Tenerife South, Palma, Alicante, Malaga, and Milan Bergamo, have reportedly experienced major disruptions.
Industry leaders and airport representatives are urging for a postponement of the system, at least until after the peak summer holiday period. The head of Europe’s airports trade body, ACI Europe, has voiced deep concerns, noting that border wait times have reached up to five hours during peak periods.
The European Commission maintains that efforts are underway to minimize the impact on travelers and that issues stem partly from member states failing to provide adequate border guards, infrastructure, and automated equipment.
However, the inconsistent rollout and technical glitches, as seen at the Port of Dover with French border checks, have fueled anxieties. One traveler recounted missing a flight from Rome due to lengthy queues and malfunctioning EES machines, resulting in unexpected costs.
Airlines UK and Airlines for America have called for a pragmatic assessment of the current timeline and the implementation of contingency measures to avoid a summer of travel woes.
