The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and Busoga Kingdom have formalized a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at accelerating digital transformation and socio-economic development across the region.

This collaboration seeks to broaden access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services, stimulate digital innovation, and safeguard the cultural heritage of the Busoga Kingdom. Key components of the agreement include the establishment of Business Innovation and Incubation Centres, e-training portals, and computer laboratories within schools throughout Busoga.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo highlighted that the partnership merges the commission’s regulatory functions with the kingdom’s leadership to bolster digital inclusion. “This collaboration bridges regulatory purpose and cultural leadership, with the sole aim of accelerating digital transformation and socio-economic empowerment at the grassroots,” Thembo stated.

The strategy focuses on bringing ICT services closer to communities through targeted investments in infrastructure development and skills training. This initiative is expected to equip young people and entrepreneurs with essential skills in areas like fintech, e-commerce, and software innovation, thereby creating new economic opportunities.

Furthermore, the partnership will support the digitization of Busoga’s rich cultural heritage, including indigenous knowledge and historical artifacts, to promote tourism and ensure the preservation of the kingdom’s history for future generations. Joint digital literacy and consumer awareness campaigns are also planned to promote the safe and responsible use of digital technologies.

The MOU was signed by representatives from both institutions, underscoring a shared commitment to advancing the digital agenda in Busoga.
