The Ugandan government is making significant strides in accelerating the establishment of the Eastern Regional Agro-Science, Technology and Industrial Park at Busitema University. This initiative marks a crucial shift from the planning phase to active implementation, aiming to translate scientific research into tangible enterprises and drive Uganda’s industrialization agenda.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, visited Busitema University’s Arapai and main campuses to champion the project. He emphasized that the park is poised to transform scientific discoveries into viable businesses, enhance the value addition of agricultural products, and cultivate Eastern Uganda as a center for science-led production and innovation.
“Our focus is on transforming research into enterprise, accelerating agro-industrial value addition, strengthening technology transfer and positioning Eastern Uganda as a competitive hub for science-driven production, innovation and industrial growth,” stated Minister Asiimwe during his engagements with university stakeholders. He toured the designated project site and university facilities, recognizing the existing infrastructure and academic capabilities as valuable assets for aligning research with national development goals.
The Minister stressed the importance of universities prioritizing innovations that tackle practical challenges, foster job creation, and support the expansion of local industries. He asserted that “Innovation delivers its greatest value only when it solves real problems, creates jobs and builds industries.”
Minister Asiimwe further highlighted that Uganda’s economic advancement hinges on the commercialization of research rather than solely exporting raw materials. He believes that “The future of Uganda’s economy will not be secured by exporting raw potential, but by commercialising research, deepening academia-industry collaboration and building institutions that convert knowledge into technologies, enterprises and shared prosperity.”
The proposed park is set to bolster agricultural research, innovation, technology transfer, and value addition, ultimately contributing to job creation and robust industrial development in the Eastern region. The government views science, technology, and innovation as fundamental drivers of socio-economic progress, encouraging higher learning institutions to align their research with national development priorities.
