In a significant development concerning the case involving National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Mufumbiro, three co-accused individuals have entered guilty pleas. Yasin Sserugo, Farouk Baruku, and Edwin Sserunkuuma reportedly admitted to the charges brought against them during court proceedings.
This plea marks a shift in the case, as these three individuals are now expected to enter into discussions with the government regarding the next steps. While the details of these discussions remain private, their guilty pleas suggest a potential resolution separate from Mufumbiro and the remaining co-defendants.
The court, presided over by Kawempe Chief Magistrate Doreen Ainembabazi, has scheduled July 10th to deliver a ruling on a fresh bail application for Mufumbiro and the other accused who have not yet pleaded guilty. The defense team had previously challenged an earlier bail denial, arguing it was legally flawed.
Furthermore, the defense successfully petitioned for Mufumbiro’s charge related to alleged unlawful possession of ammunition to be transferred to the High Court. Lawyers argued that the handling of the case by the lower court had eroded confidence in a fair trial. The Chief Magistrate agreed to this transfer, with a hearing date to be set in the High Court.
Supporters of the NUP are closely monitoring the proceedings as the legal battle for Mufumbiro and the remaining accused continues to unfold, with the bail decision on July 10th being a key point to watch. The case highlights ongoing legal scrutiny faced by opposition figures in Uganda.
