Members of Parliament representing the Teso sub-region have made a public appeal to President Yoweri Museveni, urging him to show mercy towards Speaker Anita Annet Among. The legislators visited Among at her Nakasero residence and reportedly found her in a state of declining health.

Among is currently facing allegations of illicit wealth accumulation, which led to raids on her properties and the confiscation of several vehicles. Security agencies have reportedly placed her under house arrest, limiting her public appearances. During the visit, Among is said to have disclosed serious health issues, including a blood clot, diabetes, and high blood pressure, necessitating specialized medical care.

“These are serious health challenges that we want government to look upon with mercy because she needs to come out and receive proper medical attention,” stated Silas Aogon, MP for Kumi Municipality. He described the situation as a betrayal, lamenting how close associates have allegedly turned against her.

Fellow MPs echoed the sentiment, expressing concern for Among’s physical and emotional well-being. Peter Paul Emaju, MP for Kasilo, emphasized the need for compassion alongside the legal process. “While we fully appreciate the importance of accountability and the rule of law, we respectfully pray that compassion may accompany justice in considering her present circumstances,” he said.

The Teso legislators are calling for humane treatment and dignity for Among, regardless of the accusations against her. They have also requested the unfreezing of her bank accounts. Jane Francis Amongin, MP for Kaberamaido District, invoked an African proverb, urging the President to “wash the child” rather than discard them, highlighting that Among, despite potential missteps, is fundamentally a good person grappling with distress.

The MPs hope that President Museveni will consider their plea and allow Speaker Among access to the medical care she requires. They believe she has served the country diligently and deserves leniency.
