Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kampala has voiced significant concerns regarding the integrity of Uganda’s electoral system, directly challenging Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama. Speaking at Lubaga Cathedral during a Mass attended by EC officials, Ssemogerere raised pointed questions about why the will of voters appears to be undermined after they participate in the electoral process.

The Archbishop highlighted a growing sense of uncertainty and anxiety among Ugandans, stating that many are left with unresolved questions about the nation’s political trajectory and the fairness of its elections.

In response, Justice Byabakama advised citizens experiencing election irregularities to pursue justice through the judicial system, emphasizing that legal channels are the proper recourse for electoral disputes. He encouraged the public to engage actively in the upcoming Local Council One (LC1) chairperson elections.

Byabakama urged voters to remain at polling stations after casting their ballots to observe the vote counting process and witness the results directly. This is a departure from previous advice encouraging voters to leave promptly.

Furthermore, incumbent village chairpersons were cautioned against interfering with voter registration by enlisting ineligible residents. The EC’s remarks come in the wake of recent general elections, which saw numerous petitions and disputes stemming from allegations of altered results, leading to significant controversies and delays.

During the same service, Archbishop Ssemogerere also ordained over 30 seminarians into the ministries of Lector and Acolyte.
