A Delta flight preparing to land at Chicago’s Midway International Airport experienced a startling encounter when it was struck by a firework, according to reports.
The flight, originating from Atlanta, was on its final descent when the incident occurred. A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines confirmed to the BBC that the aircraft “reportedly made contact with a firework while on descent.”
“The flight safely landed and taxied to the gate,” the airline stated. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the 52 passengers and six crew members on board. The incident was subsequently reported to aviation authorities.
The pilot, in communication with air traffic control, described hearing a “big bang” and estimated the impact occurred at approximately 200 feet above the ground. Before the incident, controllers had issued a caution, warning the pilots about fireworks being set off from homes near the approach path.
The Chicago Police Department reported that the aircraft “was struck by an unknown object” causing “minor paint damage.” Following the landing, the Airbus A319 was inspected, and Delta confirmed that no damage was found.
This event happened during widespread Fourth of July celebrations across the United States, a period commonly marked by private and public firework displays. While official celebrations are often grand, like the large display in Washington D.C., private fireworks near airports pose a significant safety risk.
This incident underscores the dangers posed by unchecked firework usage, especially in proximity to active flight paths. Aviation authorities will likely investigate further to determine the source and prevent future occurrences.
