Amsterdam recently hosted the vibrant Euro Cranes Tournament, an annual football competition that saw significant participation from Uganda’s diaspora and diplomatic corps. This year marked a notable expansion for the event, which began in 2018 with only five teams. Over 750 attendees gathered at Bijlmersportpark to witness ten teams, including debutants from the United States and Greece, compete.

The tournament has evolved beyond a simple sporting event into a collaborative effort among Uganda’s diplomatic missions in Europe. Ambassador Mirjam Blaak Sow, Uganda’s envoy to Brussels, spearheaded this year’s edition, welcoming ambassadors from across the continent. These missions see the event as a crucial platform for strengthening ties among Ugandans living abroad, promoting friendship, and reinforcing a shared national identity.

Ambassador Elizabeth Paula Napeyok, representing Uganda from Rome, emphasized the tournament’s broader significance, stating it’s a space to “strengthen the bonds among Ugandans living abroad, promote friendship, nurture talent, and reinforce our shared identity as proud Ugandans.” She lauded the collective effort involved in organizing the event and encouraged participants to embody discipline and fair play.

The presence of numerous ambassadors, including those from Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen, and London, underscores the increasing importance of diaspora engagement for Uganda’s foreign missions. This engagement is particularly relevant given the diaspora’s growing economic contributions, with remittances reaching an estimated $2.5 billion in 2025, a significant portion originating from the United States.

The tournament concluded with the US team claiming the championship. Germany is set to host the 2027 edition, continuing the tradition of rotating the event and highlighting the expanding reach of both the diaspora and Uganda’s international outreach. The 2026 event was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
