Nigeria has strongly condemned the killing of two of its citizens in South Africa, incidents that have occurred amidst a notable surge in anti-foreigner sentiment within the country. The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Emeka Charles Iroegbu was allegedly killed by police on June 28th, with the ministry citing “gruesome interrogation techniques.” On the same day, Musa Yunana Joe, a shop owner, was killed by unidentified attackers outside his business.

These events unfold as South Africa grapples with rising xenophobia, leading many African nations to repatriate their citizens. Reports indicate approximately 25,000 foreign nationals have been repatriated from South Africa, including around 700 Nigerians, as some groups demand the government curb illegal migration, alleging it strains resources and takes jobs.

Nigerian officials have placed the South African government “on notice,” vowing to explore “all options” if the “intolerance and apartheid-style behaviour” towards foreigners persists. Nigeria has also indicated its intention to seek compensation for its citizens who have left, though South African minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stated her government would not pay compensation and suggested Nigerians could sell their registered properties. Ntshavheni’s subsequent remarks about Nigerian “drug dens” were decried by Nigeria as “hate speech.”

Nigeria’s foreign ministry has accused South African protest groups like March on March and Operation Dudula of inciting violence. The country is considering regional and international legal action, though specific steps remain unclear. South Africa, facing high unemployment, continues to be a destination for job seekers from neighboring and other African countries.
