Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, has strongly advised students, parents, and educators to seek a true spiritual rebirth, emphasizing that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is more transformative than mere religious rites.
Speaking at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano during a confirmation service for students from Makobore High School Kinyasano and Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale, Bishop Asiimwe clarified that biblical salvation stems from the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence, not just participation in sacraments.
He expounded on the Trinitarian nature of God and the tripartite composition of humans—spirit, soul, and body. Bishop Asiimwe likened the soul, encompassing will, mind, and emotions, to a building requiring a divine foundation for stability.
The bishop issued a direct warning against various forms of sexual immorality, including pornography, masturbation, and phone sex, stating these practices sever one’s connection with God and stunt spiritual development. “Unless you’re born again, this confirmation will only be a ritual,” he asserted, highlighting that rites are insufficient without a profound personal encounter with Christ.
Drawing an analogy from evangelist D. L. Moody, Bishop Asiimwe described humanity as a “leaking vessel” that needs constant replenishment through prayer, repentance, and righteous living. He detailed how sins like lying, theft, and anger spiritually deplete believers, underscoring the necessity of daily reliance on God.
Furthermore, Bishop Asiimwe promoted unity among Christians across different denominations, stating that shared spiritual identity in Christ transcends denominational affiliations. He encouraged prayers for greater unity and a focus on the Gospel message over doctrinal disputes.
During the service, an altar call resulted in over 20 individuals, including students and parents, making public commitments to Christianity. The event gathered a diverse congregation of students, parents, teachers, clergy, and community members to celebrate faith and discipleship.
