Buganda Kingdom’s legislative body, the Lukiiko, has given its unanimous approval to a substantial budget of Shs 409.315 billion for the upcoming 2026/2027 financial year. This figure represents a notable 34 percent increase compared to the Shs 320.508 billion allocated in the previous fiscal period.

The budget is guided by the theme, “Raising Standards: Enhancing Quality and Professionalism in the Effort to Restore Buganda to Greater Heights.” It aims at strengthening service delivery, improving institutional efficiency, and fostering the socio-economic well-being of Buganda’s populace.

During the Lukiiko session, presided over by Speaker Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, Kingdom Treasurer Robert Waggwa Nsibirirwa highlighted key areas of focus for the budget. These include enhancing agriculture, boosting tourism, improving healthcare services, advancing education, and promoting decent housing as critical drivers for socio-economic transformation.

Nsibirirwa also mentioned ongoing strategic development initiatives, such as the Nvubo Project, a digital platform designed to streamline financial transactions for Kingdom projects, and the development of an industrial park and an agricultural training institute at Jeza. The Kingdom anticipates receiving over Shs 200 billion in funds owed from the central government. The budget emphasizes technology, transparency, accountability, and sound financial management, while also considering the global economic landscape.

The Lukiiko’s approval was followed by the tabling of several resolutions, including measures for human rights protection and the formal endorsement of the financial plan. Many delegates expressed optimism that the budget’s implementation will spur development and enhance livelihoods throughout the Kingdom.
