The Birinzi Shrine in the Catholic Diocese of Masaka was a focal point for hundreds of faithful who embarked on a pilgrimage to honor the martyrdom of St. Charles Lwanga. The annual event, led by Bishop Severus Jjumba, served as a spiritual retreat and a call for resilience in the face of contemporary challenges.
During the Holy Mass, Bishop Jjumba encouraged attendees to draw strength from St. Charles Lwanga’s unwavering faith, especially amidst difficulties such as climate change impacts and unemployment. He urged Christians to emulate the Ugandan martyr’s commitment, courage, and integrity in their daily lives and responsibilities.
A significant moment during the pilgrimage was the institution of 13 seminarians into the Ministry of Lector by Bishop Jjumba. This marks a crucial stage in their discernment towards the priesthood. The Rector of Butende Major Seminary, Rev. Fr. Timothy Semwogerere, exhorted the candidates to embody the discipline and humility expected of future priests.
Rev. Fr. Michael Kamulegeya, the caretaker of Birinzi Shrine, expressed gratitude for the support received for the shrine’s development while appealing for further assistance to complete ongoing construction projects. Pilgrims, including Masaka City Mayor Florence Namayanja, highlighted the pilgrimage’s importance as a spiritual solace for those unable to attend the national Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo.
Participants also called upon public leaders to embody the selfless service and integrity of St. Charles Lwanga. The pilgrimage at Birinzi Shrine continues to grow as a significant commemoration, fostering renewed commitment to Christian values among the faithful.
