The Kampala Hash House Harriers’ annual relay race concluded this past Saturday in Jinja City, drawing an impressive turnout of over 600 runners. The demanding 88.1-kilometer course, starting from Kira Municipality, represented one of the longest distances in the event’s history, culminating at the Source of the Nile Hotel.

Runners from 32 different clubs competed across nine categories, showcasing a high level of athletic performance. Peter Akwech, representing the Uganda Prisons Services, noted the event’s significance as a training ground, suggesting the caliber of runners this year could position them as strong contenders in the forthcoming Tusker Rwenzori Marathon.

Edrisa Bukosi, a seasoned participant and nine-time champion who secured third place this year, expressed satisfaction with the event despite managing injuries. He highlighted the relay’s value in fostering interaction among runners of diverse skill levels and its consistent delivery of new experiences.

Jovia Athieno, a female competitor in the full 88.1km CD1 category, found running alongside men to be a challenging yet ultimately fulfilling experience. She remarked on the inspiring nature of completing the rigorous course.

Irene Nyakwebara, Marketing Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, confirmed their sponsorship and announced that preparations for the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, scheduled for August 22, are well underway. Early ticket purchases are encouraged, as runners from 20 countries have already registered.

Alice Gitta Okecho from Kampala Hash House Harriers emphasized the rarity and importance of such relay races in promoting fitness and healthy living in Uganda. She observed a steady increase in participation over the years, with this edition also attracting runners from Kenya. Gitta also commended the varied terrain for building runner endurance and Tusker Lite for their support in organizing the event.

Runners are now encouraged to register early for the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, taking place next month on August 22.
