The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP) is showing substantial progress, with several road and market initiatives nearing completion. Assessments by the Ministry of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs reveal that road works in Mukono are approximately 80 percent finished.

In Makindye, the Lubugumu–Kakoola Road, managed by China First Highway Engineering Company, is at an advanced stage, with only road markings and final clean-up remaining before its handover at the end of this month. This project is part of a larger effort funded by a US$518 million loan from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), supplemented by grants from the French Development Agency (AFD).

Beyond roads, the program is focused on economic transformation. A modern livestock market is planned for Mukono, spanning over 50 acres. This facility will include a skills development center, a food market, and mini-processing units to enhance the value of livestock products before they reach regional markets.

Market infrastructure improvements are also a priority in other areas. Nansana Central Market is set to provide traders with a modern trading environment, supported by several road construction packages underway in Nansana itself. These roads are expected to be completed by November and December.

Several markets, including those in Entebbe, Wakiso, and Mpigi, have already been commissioned. The GKMA-UDP aims to address the infrastructure demands of rapid urbanisation, aligning with national development plans and the GKMA Integrated Urban Development Master Plan. The overall goal is to foster a competitive, resilient, and economically vibrant metropolitan region that improves livelihoods and business opportunities.
