The Deputy Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, has issued a strong call to parents, asserting that the core responsibility for raising and disciplining children rests firmly with them. Speaking at the tenth anniversary of Jinja Comprehensive Secondary School, he cautioned against delegating this crucial role entirely to educators.

Sheikh Waiswa highlighted that while schools play a vital role in a child’s development, they serve as a complementary force to the values instilled within the home. “The upbringing of children is the responsibility of parents,” he stated, encouraging a collaborative approach between families and educational institutions to cultivate “responsible and God-fearing citizens.”

To facilitate better oversight of children’s well-being and academic performance, the Deputy Mufti advised parents to consider enrolling their children in schools located nearer to their residences. This proximity, he suggested, would allow for more effective monitoring and engagement.

Furthermore, Sheikh Waiswa underscored the importance of financial punctuality and constructive cooperation with school administrations. He urged parents to meet their financial obligations promptly, emphasizing that “honesty by paying the required school fees on time and cooperat[ing] with the school administration” enables institutions to “produce the best out of the children.”

During the event, Sheikh Waiswa also commended the founders of Jinja Comprehensive Secondary School, Muhammad Isabirye and Nelson Balabyeki, for their foresight in establishing an institution that has significantly grown and is now recognized as a leading performer in the region. The school’s journey from 80 students to over 1,800, with 103 staff members, was celebrated, acknowledging the crucial support of parents and stakeholders.
