Widespread violence erupted at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka, leading to the deaths of 26 individuals, including several prison guards, and injuring more than 100 others. The conflict, spanning two days, reportedly began as a dispute between rival inmate factions.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that prisoners managed to seize guards’ weapons on Sunday, escalating the initial clashes. By Monday, the situation had deteriorated further as inmates attempted to breach the prison gates, prompting a forceful response from security forces.
The underlying cause of the riots is believed to be an altercation stemming from an inmate’s alleged cooperation with authorities regarding a drug trafficking ring operating within the prison. This internal conflict quickly spiraled into broader unrest.
Medical facilities reported treating numerous individuals with gunshot wounds, as well as those sustaining injuries from cuts and beatings. The Negombo Hospital and Colombo National Hospital received many of the wounded, with some inmates suffering from injuries sustained when a portion of the prison roof collapsed.
Family members of inmates gathered outside the prison, expressing distress and a lack of information regarding the condition of their loved ones. The Sri Lankan government has acknowledged the severity of the situation, with prison authorities initiating steps to transfer inmates to less crowded facilities.
An investigation into the incident has been ordered by the Minister of Justice and Prisons. Statistics reveal that Sri Lankan prisons are severely overcrowded, holding over 41,000 inmates, which is four times their intended capacity. This overcrowding is a recurring issue that contributes to such volatile situations.
This outbreak of violence is considered the most severe in recent memory, surpassing a similar incident in December 2020 where 11 people died in another prison facility. Military forces have been placed on standby to assist the police in managing the aftermath.
