The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Colonel Chris Magezi, has addressed concerns raised by Ugandans currently in South Africa, assuring them that there is no truth to claims of potential arrest or persecution upon their return to Uganda. These assurances were made as the UPDF welcomed the third batch of repatriated citizens at Entebbe International Airport.

Colonel Magezi urged all Ugandans still residing in South Africa to register for the ongoing government-led repatriation program. He emphasized that the government is committed to facilitating their safe return home and that fears of being targeted for past criticisms are unfounded.

An Ethiopian Airlines flight recently brought 255 Ugandans, including men, women, and children, back from South Africa. This contingent is the third group to be evacuated by the government, bringing the total number of returnees to approximately 700. Officials acknowledged that many Ugandans remain in South Africa and reiterated the commitment to assist all who wish to return.

Col. Magezi highlighted Uganda’s ongoing development and encouraged returnees to actively participate in nation-building. He stated that now is an opportune moment for Ugandans abroad to come home and contribute to the country’s progress.

Some of the returnees shared accounts of hardship in South Africa, including the loss of businesses and livelihoods. They expressed gratitude for the government’s repatriation efforts and appealed for support to help them rebuild their lives in Uganda.

Community leaders among the returnees also requested an extension of the registration deadline for the repatriation program, believing that more time would enable additional stranded Ugandans to benefit from the initiative and return home safely.
