The Ugandan government has successfully repatriated 166 more of its nationals from South Africa, marking a significant continuation of the ongoing voluntary evacuation exercise. This latest group of returnees arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Sunday, having been flown from Durban.
This brings the total number of Ugandans evacuated under the program to 730. The initiative was launched in response to a surge of anti-migrant violence that has targeted foreign nationals, including Ugandans, in various parts of South Africa.
The returnees were welcomed by government officials, including Ambassador Dickson Ogwang, who represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Ogwang assured the evacuees of the government’s commitment to supporting them as they reintegrate and begin rebuilding their lives.
“We reaffirm the Government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare of Ugandan citizens wherever they may be,” stated Ambassador Ogwang, emphasizing that the returnees remain “valued and integral members of the Ugandan family.” He encouraged them to remain hopeful and resilient.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed that this latest flight was the fourth in the series, following earlier flights that brought back 266, 32, and another 266 Ugandans. The entire operation was ordered by President Yoweri Museveni, with Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja tasked to coordinate the government’s response.
The intervention came after disturbing reports of violence, including the deaths of three Ugandan nationals and physical assaults in cities like Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. The Ugandan High Commission in Pretoria, in collaboration with various government bodies and South African authorities, is coordinating these efforts to ensure safe and dignified returns.
Additional flights are being scheduled to accommodate all registered Ugandan nationals wishing to return home. Meanwhile, Ugandans still in South Africa are advised to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and heed safety advisories as the situation is closely monitored.
