Yang Youlin, who held various positions in Nanjing between 1993 and 2023, has been sentenced to death by a court in Changzhou city. The 69-year-old was found guilty of accepting bribes exceeding 2.2 billion yuan (approximately $325 million), alongside charges of embezzlement, abuse of power, and money laundering.
State media reported that Yang exploited his influence to grant engineering contracts, facilitate land transfers, and secure financing for individuals and companies in exchange for vast sums of money and other valuables. His illicit gains are among the largest recorded in recent years.
This sentencing comes as part of President Xi Jinping’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted various sectors, including the military and high-level finance. The court stated that Yang’s offenses were of an “extremely serious nature” and caused “exceptionally heavy losses” to the state and its citizens.
While death sentences for financial crimes remain rare in China, they are typically reserved for cases involving exceptionally large sums, often exceeding 1 billion yuan. Previous high-profile executions include former finance chief Lai Xiaomin and Inner Mongolia official Li Jianping, both convicted of massive bribery and embezzlement.
Despite Yang reportedly pleading guilty and expressing remorse, the court deemed his offenses too grave. His cooperation with authorities in reporting other offenders was deemed insufficient to warrant a lesser punishment, leading to the ultimate sentence.
