Parliament Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, has lodged an urgent bail application with the High Court’s Anti-Corruption Division. Obore, arrested on July 2 and subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison, faces charges of embezzlement and money laundering.
The 52-year-old filed his application from Murchison Bay Prison, following his appearance in court alongside six other senior parliamentary staff. Their case was adjourned to July 27 by Chief Magistrate Esther Asiimwe, who declined to handle bail matters, stating that due to co-accused applying for bail in the High Court and the seriousness of the money laundering charge, the High Court is the appropriate venue.
Obore’s legal team, Omongole and Company Advocates, contends that bail is a constitutional right for individuals awaiting trial. In a sworn affidavit, Obore highlights his role as the sole provider for his family, emphasizing that his continued incarceration is causing significant hardship, impacting their ability to cover essential expenses like food, school fees, and medical care.
To counter concerns about him being a flight risk, Obore has submitted his passport, proof of a permanent residence, a land title, and a letter from his local council. He asserts he has no prior criminal record and has identified credible sureties who will guarantee his adherence to any court-imposed conditions. Furthermore, Obore claims he is unfamiliar with the prosecution’s witnesses and poses no risk of interfering with the ongoing investigation.
He remains in detention until his next court appearance on July 27.
