Eighteen individuals sustained injuries in a series of explosions that rocked central Damascus on Tuesday. Syrian state news agency Sana reported that security forces detected two explosive devices and that they detonated as specialists began the defusal process.

One device was reportedly concealed within a parked vehicle, while the second was found in a nearby bin. The blasts occurred in close proximity to the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying as part of his official visit to Syria.

President Macron was in Damascus for high-level talks with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, at the presidential palace. Macron’s office assured that the president was safe and did not hear the explosions.

Among the injured were four police officers. The Ministry of Interior has launched an investigation to determine the perpetrators of the attack.

Videos circulating on social media depicted plumes of smoke and flames rising from the scene. An eyewitness described two distinct explosions, the first causing property damage and the second resulting in casualties among public security forces and traffic police.

President Macron, who arrived in Syria on Monday, is the first EU leader to visit since al-Sharaa assumed power. This visit signals Syria’s re-emergence on the global stage following years of isolation and focuses on economic challenges and reconstruction.

The incidents highlight the significant security challenges Syria faces, including threats from militant groups.
