The Makindye Chief Magistrate’s court has deferred the bail application of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago until July 16. The decision comes as the court awaits further guidance on significant health issues raised by Lukwago’s defense team.

Lukwago, who appeared remotely from Luzira Prison, informed the court that his health has severely declined, necessitating urgent medical intervention. He cited recommendations from specialists for treatment abroad, specifically in India.

He faces charges of misprision of treason, accused of failing to report an alleged plot to overthrow the government involving Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya. Lukwago has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is seeking bail.

Previously, the trial chief magistrate had ordered Lukwago’s transfer to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized care, but he was later returned to prison. During his court appearance, Lukwago detailed chronic lung complications, issues stemming from spinal surgery in 2024 involving artificial disc implants, and hearing and balance disorders.

His legal team stressed the urgency of his situation, requesting the court to address his health before other matters. Lukwago expressed a critical need to return to India for further assessment and treatment, stating, “I need to be in India immediately if my life is to be saved.”

Further complicating his situation, Lukwago reported that a specialized therapeutic pillow, prescribed for his hypertension and other conditions, was dismantled by prison authorities. He argued that prison conditions prevent him from adhering to medical recommendations for sleep and circulation.

The prosecution indicated that investigations are ongoing and did not object to an adjournment. The court was informed that Mulago National Referral Hospital had submitted a medical report.

Grade One Magistrate Joan Nanjala adjourned the hearing to July 16, when the trial chief magistrate is expected to provide updated directions concerning Lukwago’s health concerns and his bail request.
