Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s health has reportedly taken a turn for the worse while in detention, leading to his remand being extended until July 16. Appearing virtually before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lukwago conveyed his grave concerns about his condition, stating that without urgent specialized treatment, his situation amounts to a “death sentence.”

Lukwago, who has been in custody for three weeks, appeared via Zoom rather than being physically present. His lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, objected to the virtual appearance, deeming it “clandestine” as the defense was not informed beforehand. Sseggona emphasized that the court had previously ordered Lukwago to receive specialized medical care.

During his virtual address, Lukwago revealed that he spent a week at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with five chronic conditions requiring immediate attention. These include a severe lung complication that affects his breathing, especially in poorly ventilated spaces, and ongoing issues stemming from cervical spine surgery in April 2024. Doctors reportedly hesitate to perform an MRI due to the risk to artificial discs implanted during the surgery.

Specialists have advised Lukwago to seek urgent treatment in India, warning that his health is life-threatening. He also suffers from severe insomnia, requiring sedatives to sleep, and gastritis that necessitates corrective surgery. Furthermore, he has managed hypertension for a decade and has been advised to live in well-ventilated areas and maintain a special diet.

In an emotional plea, Lukwago begged the court to facilitate access to the necessary medical care, expressing his pain and fear of dying in custody. The court, despite these appeals, adjourned the case to July 16, with Lukwago expected to appear again. Sseggona expressed disappointment at the delay, wishing the indisposed presiding magistrate a speedy recovery.
