Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, currently detained in Luzira Prison, has made a desperate plea to the court, stating that if he cannot access the specialized medical treatment recommended by doctors for his severe conditions, he would prefer to be given medication to end his life painlessly. Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has expressed extreme distress over his deteriorating health while in Luzira Prison, telling a court that his condition requires urgent, specialized treatment. Appearing virtually before the court, Lukwago stated that specialists at Mulago National Referral Hospital have diagnosed him with five serious medical issues, including a lung condition affecting his breathing, a re-fractured shoulder bone, a severe ear ailment, a hernia, persistent headaches, and an irregular heartbeat.
Lukwago informed the magistrate that his doctors advised him to travel to India for treatment and recommended specific medical equipment, such as a special mattress and pillow. However, he claims that access to this care has been obstructed, with prison authorities delaying inspections of the equipment and some items allegedly damaged during security checks. He is only receiving mild medication for his ear condition despite needing stronger drugs.
During the court session, Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Sseggona, raised concerns about the proceedings, noting the absence of the trial magistrate and the lack of explanation for his virtual appearance. Sseggona argued that his client is critically ill and adjourning the case without hearing him is unacceptable.
Lukwago passionately articulated that the treatment he requires cannot be adequately provided within the prison confines. “Keeping me in prison in my current condition is condemning me to death,” he declared. In an emotional appeal, he implored the court, “If I cannot receive the treatment I need, give me medicine that will allow me to die a painless death.”
Sseggona urged the court to direct prison authorities to ensure Lukwago receives the necessary medical care, questioning the efficacy of their assurances regarding adequate healthcare and highlighting how their actions have allegedly worsened his client’s condition. The matter is pending the trial magistrate’s review.
