Political Upset: Among to Serve Under Zaake's Committee Leadership

A significant shift in parliamentary dynamics has placed former Speaker Anita Among in a new role, serving as a member of the Committee on Government Assurances and Implementation. This committee will be chaired by Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake, her long-standing political rival.

The appointment, announced by Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng, positions Among, the Bukedea District Woman Representative, as an ordinary committee member. Zaake, designated by the opposition, will lead the committee, with Soroti Woman MP Anna Adeke serving as vice chairperson.

The Committee on Government Assurances and Implementation holds a crucial oversight function, tasked with monitoring government promises and commitments made in Parliament and assessing their fulfillment by various state bodies.

This arrangement marks a notable reversal for Among, who presided over Parliament as Speaker until early this year. Zaake had been one of her most vocal critics during her tenure, frequently accusing the leadership of victimizing opposition legislators.

Their relationship has been characterized by years of public confrontations and disciplinary battles. Zaake famously became a symbol of opposition resistance during the 2017 “Togikwatako” age-limit bill debate, where he was injured during physical altercations within the parliamentary chambers. More recently, in November 2024, he was involved in another physical altercation and subsequently criticized Among for failing to ensure parliamentary safety.

Political tensions escalated in March 2022 when Parliament voted to remove Zaake from the Parliamentary Commission after he was accused of misconduct concerning social media statements directed at Among. However, this decision was later nullified by the Constitutional Court due to a lack of quorum.

The current appointments reflect a strategic reallocation of members to parliamentary committees for the new session, underscoring evolving political landscapes within the 12th Parliament following the conclusion of Among’s speakership.
