The Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon, born from a visionary expedition in June 2022, has rapidly transformed Kasese into a prominent destination for sports tourism. Spearheaded by tourism entrepreneur Amos Wekesa, the event initially seemed like a lofty dream but has since blossomed into a major international race.
Four years ago, the idea was to create a platform to showcase the stunning Rwenzori Mountains. Today, the marathon attracts thousands of runners, fills local hotels, generates substantial business for the Kasese community, and puts Uganda on the global tourism map. The event has fostered a strong sense of ownership among participants, locals, and partners alike.
The marathon’s journey began with a simple yet ambitious vision: to fuse sport, tourism, lifestyle, and entertainment against the backdrop of the majestic mountains. Launched by Equator Hikes and Tusker Lite, the event emphasized active lifestyles and shared experiences. The inaugural race in September 2022, despite facing challenging weather and terrain, quickly became known for its unique, demanding course, which participants found more engaging than typical city marathons.
The local community embraced the marathon wholeheartedly, turning villages along the route into vibrant cheering zones. Post-race celebrations evolved into the popular Tusker Lite Neon Rave, adding a distinctive lifestyle element.
By its second edition, the marathon’s growth was undeniable. Increased participation, a larger spectator base, and more partnerships translated into significant economic benefits for Kasese. Hotels saw full occupancy, and local businesses, including transport operators and restaurants, experienced a surge in activity. Road improvements further enhanced the race experience.
Beyond the immediate economic impact, which a Makerere University study estimated at over Shs3.5 billion for the 2023 event, the marathon has become a crucial platform for athletes. The race course received World Athletics certification, allowing elite runners like Abel Chelangat to achieve internationally recognized times. These certified performances have opened doors for Ugandan athletes to compete in major international races, effectively turning Kasese into a launchpad for global athletic careers.
The fourth edition saw over 3,500 runners from 56 countries participate, solidifying Kasese’s status as an international meeting point. Government bodies, including the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities and the Uganda Tourism Board, have increasingly supported the event, recognizing its role in promoting Uganda’s tourism potential.
Looking ahead, the marathon has officially attained World Athletics Label Status and is included on the World Athletics Calendar. With a recently announced USD1 million prize purse, the event is poised for even greater heights, continuing its mission to drive tourism, community development, and create significant economic opportunities for Kasese and its people.
