The Ugandan government has commenced a crucial rehabilitation effort for its citizens who have been repatriated from South Africa. This initiative follows a period of intense unrest and xenophobic violence in South Africa, which tragically resulted in the reported deaths of at least three Ugandans.

Currently housed at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, the returnees are participating in comprehensive psychosocial support and reintegration training. This program aims to help them cope with the trauma and loss they have experienced before they are reunited with their families.

The rehabilitation program has been ongoing, bolstered by the arrival of a fourth evacuation flight. This latest flight brought 166 Ugandans from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, adding to the growing number of those voluntarily returning under the government’s evacuation scheme. Uganda’s Ambassador to South Africa, Paul Amoru, confirmed that these arrivals have brought the total number of repatriated Ugandans to 730.

At NALI, returnees receive vital counseling to address the emotional and psychological toll of the violence. Many have had to abandon businesses, jobs, and homes, with some losing family members. The program also focuses on rebuilding confidence and preparing them for a successful return to their communities.

Officials have highlighted the unique challenges faced by younger returnees, including children born and raised in South Africa, for whom this evacuation marks their first experience in Uganda. They require specialized support to adapt to a new social and cultural landscape while processing their displacement.

Another evacuation is planned for next week, with expectations of bringing the total repatriated to around 1,000 individuals. The government acknowledges that foreign nationals were disproportionately affected by the recent South African unrest, facing hostility related to employment, business, and inter-citizen relationships.
