Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, has publicly declared that powerful, unnamed individuals he referred to as “mafias” are attempting to obstruct his work. Byamukama, who was recently promoted from State Minister, believes these “mafias” are apprehensive about his commitment to enforcing accountability and tackling corruption within government projects.

While inspecting road construction, Byamukama revealed that he has received intelligence regarding plots to “put him down.” He asserted his readiness to counter these efforts, stating he possesses the necessary authority and resources to overcome any opposition. The minister specifically highlighted issues of inflated project costs, unwarranted contract extensions, and dubious claims by contractors as key areas he intends to address.

Byamukama indicated that billions of shillings have been lost through collusion between officials and contractors. He announced that such practices, including questionable price escalations and extended contracts, will no longer be tolerated under his leadership. His remarks come at a time when major infrastructure projects, such as the Busega-Mpigi Expressway, are under increased scrutiny due to escalating costs and delays.

The minister plans to adopt President Museveni’s “Kisanja no sleep” approach, emphasizing swift project implementation and rigorous supervision. He warned that companies found engaging in corrupt practices would face severe consequences, potentially including blacklisting. Byamukama is focused on improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness in infrastructure development during his tenure.
