14 Dead, 28 Injured in Tragic Bus and Trailer Collision on Kampala-Gulu Highway

Tragedy struck the Kampala-Gulu highway on Tuesday night when a speeding Opit Travellers bus collided head-on with an oncoming trailer. The catastrophic crash, which took place around 9:30 p.m. in Kulu Otit village, Omoro district, claimed the lives of 14 individuals and left 28 others with varying degrees of injuries.

Both the bus driver and the trailer driver were among those confirmed dead at the scene. Injured passengers have been rushed to multiple medical facilities in Gulu city, including Lacor Hospital and Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, for urgent treatment and postmortem examinations.

Police preliminary investigations point to excessive speeding by the bus driver as the primary cause of the accident. However, eyewitness accounts suggest the bus driver may have swerved to avoid an intoxicated pedestrian, veering into the path of the trailer.

This incident underscores the persistent issue of road safety on major Ugandan highways. Police spokesperson David Ongom Mudong reiterated that human error, including reckless driving and speeding, remains a significant contributor to frequent road crashes, despite ongoing enforcement and awareness campaigns.

He urged motorists to exercise greater discipline and appealed to passengers to actively report dangerous driving. This latest accident adds to a concerning trend of fatal collisions along the Kampala-Gulu route, largely attributed to speeding and dangerous overtaking.
