Uganda has officially joined the Invictus Community, a significant step that positions the nation as the second African country to participate in this global initiative focused on recovery through sport for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans.

This landmark decision was announced during a key Invictus Games Foundation (IGF) event. The foundation’s decision to include Uganda followed an exploratory visit where they were impressed by the resilience and camaraderie within the Ugandan military community. The visit also highlighted opportunities to enhance rehabilitation programs through sport-based initiatives.

A subsequent visit by a Ugandan delegation to London in November 2025 allowed officials to gain insights from the UK’s extensive experience in using sport for recovery.

To kickstart this initiative, the Invictus Games Foundation has provided Uganda with an initial grant of £15,000 to procure sports equipment and establish recovery activities. This funding aims to help service members rebuild confidence and find new purpose.

Rob Owen, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for Uganda’s inclusion, stating it aligns with the foundation’s goal to extend recovery opportunities to where they are most needed. He emphasized the potential for Uganda’s involvement to inspire other nations across Africa.

Uganda’s Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, highlighted that joining the Invictus Community is a crucial milestone for strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration programs for military personnel. Uganda’s President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has also reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to this partnership.

Minister Kiwanuka noted that Uganda has veterans who sustained injuries during liberation struggles and ongoing regional operations. The foundation has already made a donation of sports equipment to the Mubende Defence Forces Rehabilitation and Vocational Centre.

Uganda’s participation in the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 is anticipated to be part of the largest edition of the Games to date in terms of participating nations. Helen Helliwell, CEO of Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, welcomed Team Uganda, looking forward to a warm reception in Birmingham.

This development underscores Uganda’s dedication to supporting its servicemen and women who have sacrificed in defense of the nation and in regional peace support missions. The country looks forward to learning from and sharing its experiences with other member nations.
