In a captivating Centre Court semi-final, Karolina Muchova has triumphed over Coco Gauff in an epic encounter that went down to the wire. Muchova saved a crucial match point before emerging victorious in a tense tie-break, achieving a career-first Grand Slam final appearance.
The match, played under sweltering conditions, saw Muchova initially take control, but Gauff mounted a strong comeback. The deciding set was a high-quality affair, with neither player able to gain a decisive advantage, ultimately leading to a thrilling tie-break.
Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, found herself trailing 4-1 in the tie-break but fought back to earn a match point on her own serve. However, a uncharacteristic error saw her forehand strike the net tape, allowing Muchova to stay in contention.
Muchova herself missed her first match point opportunity, even slipping during the point. Nevertheless, she eventually sealed the astonishing 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) victory after two hours and 35 minutes of intense play. The Czech star will now face either Linda Noskova or Marta Kostyuk in Saturday’s final.
“It was very nerve-wracking. I don’t even know what I’m saying, I’m shaking and trying to sink it in,” said a visibly emotional Muchova after the match. “Honestly, it was such a big fight. It was a rollercoaster - match point and then match point down. You don’t have time to think.”
Muchova becomes the third Czech woman in recent years to reach the Wimbledon final, following in the footsteps of recent champions. She will be hoping to add her name to the prestigious list of Wimbledon victors.
