Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi Released on Bail After 169 Days

Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, a prominent figure in Ugandan politics and the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been released on bail.

Kivumbi, who previously represented Butambala County in Parliament and currently serves as the NUP’s deputy president for the Buganda region, had been in remand for 169 days.

He was arrested in January 2026 and held at Kitalya Prison, facing terrorism charges related to post-election violence that occurred in Butambala District on January 15, 2026.

The prosecution alleges Kivumbi and others were involved in attacks on Kibibi Police Station and the Butambala Electoral Commission tally centre. These incidents allegedly led to property destruction, damaged vehicles, and seven fatalities.

Kivumbi and his co-accused have denied these allegations. The former MP also chaired Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) during his tenure.

The State had opposed Kivumbi’s bail, citing ongoing investigations and the potential for witness interference. However, the defense countered by highlighting Kivumbi’s fixed abode, reliable sureties, and the extended period he had already spent in pre-trial detention.

Kivumbi was released along with 16 co-accused individuals, though six others remain in custody. Specific details regarding the bail conditions have not yet been disclosed.
