The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has rolled out a significant national competition, dubbed “Sauti Ya Uganda,” designed to cultivate patriotism and ensure more Ugandans can confidently sing their national anthems. The initiative, themed “One Nation, One Voice,” aims to deepen national pride, unity, and appreciation for Uganda’s unique identity and heritage.
During the launch, Uganda Media Centre Executive Director Alan Kasujja, representing the ICT Minister, highlighted the competition as a movement to help citizens reconnect with national symbols. He invited all Ugandans, whether solo performers, bands, or choirs, to participate.
Regional winners will each receive Shs20 million, progressing to the national finals where the ultimate winner stands to gain Shs100 million. This patriotic push is also linked to Uganda’s upcoming role as a co-host for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the AFCON organizing committee contributing Shs100 million to the contest.
To broaden engagement, the ministry has also launched a #SautiYaUganda TikTok Challenge, offering daily prizes of Shs1 million and an overall online prize of Shs5 million for participants who share videos of themselves singing the anthem. Organizers hope this campaign will increase the number of citizens who know the national anthem by heart.
Ambassadors, including veteran musician Halima Namakula and Swangz Avenue co-founder Benon Mugumbya, have thrown their support behind the initiative. Mugumbya has also pledged to offer recording opportunities to promising contestants. The inspiration for the contest reportedly stemmed from Kasujja’s personal realization that many individuals struggle to recite the national anthem fully.
Registration forms are available via the Uganda Media Centre’s official X platform.
