President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late Perezi Seth Tenywa Bukhumune, a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, commending him as a patriotic servant whose work was instrumental in the nation’s economic resurgence.
Delivering a condolence message at Bukhumune’s burial in Bugweri District, Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, conveyed the President’s respect for the veteran economist. Museveni highlighted Bukhumune’s significant contribution to the economic reforms initiated by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government after it assumed power in 1986.
These reforms, according to the President, were crucial in stabilizing Uganda’s economy. They focused on restoring price stability, rebuilding productive capacities, rehabilitating essential infrastructure, and fostering fiscal discipline, thereby setting the stage for sustained economic growth.
Bukhumune, who passed away at the age of 90, served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda from 1986 to 1990. This period was critical for economic recovery following a turbulent era in the country’s history.
His public service extended beyond the central bank. Bukhumune also participated in the Constituent Assembly from 1993 to 1996, contributing to the formulation of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution. He further held leadership roles, including chairperson of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority and significant positions within the Bugweri Chiefdom, where he served as First Deputy Katukiiro (Prime Minister) and was the pioneer chairperson of its Elders’ Council.
The President also contributed Shs10 million towards the funeral arrangements, underscoring the high regard in which Bukhumune was held.
