Singer Lil Pazo has weighed in on fellow musician Joshua Baraka’s performance at the recent Afro Nation festival, suggesting the “Wendo” singer concentrate on building a robust local following before aiming for global stages.
During a television interview, Lil Pazo expressed that Baraka’s slot at the festival was ill-timed, happening during daylight hours when the crowds were sparse. He argued that this opportunity might have been premature for the young artist.
“They made him perform during the day when most people hadn’t even arrived. He should come back home and make music for the local audience that enjoys it. He should come back to the ground and do music with the likes of us,” Lil Pazo stated, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the domestic fan base.
Lil Pazo further suggested that focusing on international gigs too early could be detrimental to an artist’s career. He posited that Baraka should solidify his market in Uganda first, gaining solid ground before venturing aggressively abroad.
“What are you looking for from international events? You should come back down. The whole situation embarrassed Ugandans and Ugandan artists, both at home and abroad,” he added, highlighting a perceived missed opportunity and potential setback.
The commentary from Lil Pazo touches upon a broader discussion within Uganda’s music circles regarding the strategic approach artists should take when seeking both local and international success.
