Uganda and France celebrate a long-standing diplomatic relationship, established shortly after Uganda’s independence in 1962. This partnership has evolved beyond cultural exchange to encompass substantial economic ties, with French investment now standing at an impressive $4.2 billion.
This substantial investment, slated for the years 2024 to 2027, positions France as a leading foreign direct investor in Uganda. The French Ambassador to Uganda, H. E. Virginie Leroy, noted the significant confidence that this investment signifies in Uganda’s burgeoning economic potential.
Currently, approximately 40 French companies are actively involved in various Ugandan sectors. These include crucial areas such as energy, transport, water management, healthcare, digital technologies, and service industries. These enterprises are not only fostering economic growth but also significantly contributing to local employment, supporting Ugandan suppliers, and facilitating the transfer of valuable skills that drive industrial development.
Ambassador Leroy commended Uganda’s rapid development, observing the accelerated growth of Kampala and other key secondary cities like Mbarara, Arua, Gulu, and Mbale. She highlighted a palpable increase in confidence, a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, and remarkable dynamism among the nation’s youth. The ongoing development of new infrastructure is further transforming the country, bolstering Uganda’s position as a vital regional economic hub and transitioning it from a landlocked nation to a more interconnected economy.
Addressing challenges such as rapid urbanization, job creation for a growing population, climate change, and the need for quality public services, Ambassador Leroy emphasized that these require sustained, long-term investment and innovative solutions, areas where French expertise can continue to play a role.
