Lukwago Seeks Court Order for Medical Trip to India Amidst Treason Charges

Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom president Erias Lukwago is seeking court approval to travel to India for specialized medical care. His legal team presented a request to the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, citing a recent medical assessment from Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Lukwago, who appeared visibly frail in court, faces charges of misprision of treason, related to an alleged plot to overthrow the government. He has pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

The defense’s request is supported by a medical report compiled after a court-ordered examination by a team of senior specialists at Mulago. The report, reviewed by defense lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona, highlighted several health issues, including hypertension, post-COVID-19 complications, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal and cervical spine complications. These stem partly from a previous artificial disc replacement surgery.

The Mulago specialists recommended continued management of his hypertension, a well-ventilated environment for his respiratory condition, and a review by the Indian surgeons who performed his earlier spinal surgery. However, they could not perform an MRI scan due to uncertainty about the compatibility of his implants with the hospital’s equipment.

Given the potential for lengthy bail processes, Lukwago’s lawyers proposed an authorized, supervised medical transfer to India. They suggested security arrangements similar to those used for his transfer to Mulago Hospital. The defense also requested that his wife accompany him as a caretaker, at their expense, and that he be allowed visitors and necessary support services during his treatment.

Lukwago’s legal team assured the court that he would return to Uganda to be remanded at Luzira Prison for continued medical observation once certified fit by doctors in India.

During the proceedings, Lukwago himself stated that crucial medical equipment for managing his condition had been dismantled by security operatives. His lawyers also noted that some of his current medications carry risks to his liver and kidneys, further underscoring the need for specialized medical attention.

The prosecution maintains its case against Lukwago, indicating it will present evidence related to travel records and electronic communications. The court is expected to deliver further directions after considering all submissions.
