Uganda has reached a significant milestone in its fight against the Ebola virus with the discharge of its last patient. A Congolese national, who had been receiving care at the Mulago National Referral Hospital’s Ebola Isolation Centre, has now recovered and been released.
Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi hailed the event as a testament to Uganda’s robust health system and effective response strategies. “This is indeed a moment of joy. It demonstrates that with early detection, prompt treatment and a strong health system, Ebola can be defeated,” he stated at a discharge ceremony.
The minister noted that the outbreak, involving the Bundibugyo strain, had a case fatality rate of approximately 10 percent, which is considered low for this particular strain. He attributed this success to the collective efforts of frontline health workers, surveillance teams, laboratory personnel, and international partners.
Despite this positive development, Dr. Baryomunsi cautioned the public against complacency. The 42-day countdown, equivalent to two Ebola incubation periods, has begun. Uganda can only officially declare the outbreak over if no new cases emerge during this critical period.
Surveillance and preparedness measures remain heightened, particularly in districts bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, where transmission continues. The government is also engaging with countries that imposed travel restrictions to resume normal travel and trade as Uganda demonstrates its containment success.
Medical teams at Mulago highlighted the facility’s strengthening capacity, noting it’s the third time the specialized unit has been utilized during an epidemic. Continuous improvement in systems and multidisciplinary care has contributed to better patient outcomes.
The World Health Organization (WHO) representative echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Uganda’s success is rooted in years of sustained investment in preparedness, even before the outbreak was declared.
According to WHO guidelines, a country must observe 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed case after the last patient tests negative and is discharged before an outbreak can be officially declared over.
