President Yoweri Museveni has impressed upon a delegation of student officers from Mali’s War College the imperative of embracing patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and economic transformation. Speaking at State House Entebbe, Museveni, a long-time advocate for African unity, highlighted these as foundational elements for the continent’s prosperity, security, and enduring development.

Drawing from his extensive experience in African affairs, the President articulated that Africa’s future hinges on fulfilling three historical missions: fostering prosperity, ensuring strategic security, and promoting unity. He stressed that true prosperity arises not from aid but from producing goods and services for wider markets, emphasizing that patriotism fuels this economic growth by securing national markets.

“When Africans began producing more sugar, textiles, milk and maize, the local market was no longer enough. That is why Pan-Africanism is not just an ideology; it is an economic necessity,” President Museveni stated, underscoring the need for regional integration to sustain economic expansion.

He further called for socio-economic transformation, urging African nations to move beyond subsistence living towards commercial production. On security, Museveni asserted that prosperity must be defended, making strategic security a vital component. He noted the evolving nature of modern warfare, extending beyond traditional domains to include space, and advocated for political integration as a means for African nations to collectively enhance their defensive capabilities.

The President welcomed cooperative efforts among West African nations, viewing deeper political and security integration as crucial for safeguarding sovereignty and accelerating development. He also touched upon the challenges posed by terrorism, advising that a comprehensive strategy addressing both ideological and military fronts is essential.

The Malian delegation, led by their War College Commandant Brig. Gen. Moussa Yoro Kanté, expressed gratitude for Uganda’s support in defense training and reiterated Mali’s commitment to Pan-African ideals. The delegation, comprising officials and officers from several African nations, was on a study tour to deepen their understanding of national security and development strategies.
