General Moses Ali, a prominent Ugandan figure whose career intertwined with the nation’s complex military and political journey, has died at the age of 87. His passing marks the end of a life that saw him serve through colonial rule, the volatile Idi Amin era, leading a rebel movement, and eventually becoming a long-serving ally in the NRM government.
Born in 1939, Ali began his career in education before joining the Uganda Army in 1968. He rose through the ranks under Idi Amin, eventually holding key ministerial positions, including Finance and Tourism. Following Amin’s fall in 1979, Ali went into exile but soon returned to become a leader of the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF).
After years of conflict in the West Nile region, Ali was among the first rebel leaders to engage in peace talks with President Museveni’s government. The 1988 peace accord, which integrated his fighters into the national army, is credited with laying the groundwork for peace in the devastated region.
Subsequently, Ali joined the NRM government and held numerous senior roles, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees. He was known for his steady influence, institutional memory, and contributions to peace efforts in northern Uganda and West Nile.
Although he stepped down from ministerial duties earlier this year due to health reasons, Ali remained an influential figure. His son, Siraji Musa Ali, was appointed Minister of State for Works and Transport, a move seen as a nod to the family’s extensive service.
General Moses Ali’s death closes a chapter on a man who played a pivotal role across diverse eras of Uganda’s history.
