General (Rtd) Moses Ali, Veteran Statesman, Dies at 87

General (Rtd) Moses Ali, a prominent figure in Uganda’s military and political landscape for over five decades, has died at the age of 87. Family members confirmed his passing at Nakasero Hospital on Saturday afternoon. A daughter of the deceased, speaking anonymously, stated that the veteran statesman passed away around 4:25 p.m.

Sources within the Office of the Prime Minister indicated that Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja is expected to make an official government announcement. Former Health Minister Capt. Mike Mukula also shared the news on social media, extending condolences.

Born in 1939, General Ali’s career began in the Uganda Army in the 1960s. He rose through the ranks, notably serving as a senior commander and minister under Idi Amin’s government in the 1970s. Following Amin’s fall, Ali led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebellion before peace negotiations led to its integration into the national army.

He was commissioned as a Major General and subsequently held numerous significant Cabinet positions. These included stints as Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, and most recently as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament until 2026. His military promotions continued, culminating in the rank of General in 2012.

General Ali was instrumental in brokering peace in the West Nile region, facilitating the integration of former rebels into the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF). He remained an influential politician, representing Adjumani West County. Though re-elected in 2026, he was not reappointed to the Cabinet, marking the end of his extensive public service career.
