Commercial Court Recovers Shs90 Billion Through Two-Week Mediation Drive

Kampala’s Commercial Court has announced a significant achievement following a recent two-week mediation drive aimed at expediting the resolution of banking, loan, and credit-related disputes. The initiative, which ran from May 18 to May 29, 2026, successfully unlocked cases valued at over Shs90 billion.
According to the head judge of the Commercial Court, Anna Mugenyi, a total of 527 cases were scheduled for mediation during the period. Impressively, 417 of these cases were completed, achieving a completion rate of nearly 80%. Within this successful resolution rate, 97 cases were fully settled through the mediation process.
“These settlements enabled parties to avoid prolonged litigation, reduce legal costs, preserve commercial relationships, and facilitate faster realization of business outcomes,” stated Judge Mugenyi, highlighting the tangible benefits of the drive. The combined value of the disputes amicably resolved reached Shs90.679 billion.
A notable success story was the resolution of a dispute between Bank of India (Uganda) Limited and Qualicoff (U) Ltd, involving Shs5.292 billion. This complex case was settled and closed within 82 days of filing, demonstrating mediation’s effectiveness in timely and cost-efficient dispute resolution.
Bank of Uganda Governor, Michael Etingi-Ego, lauded the judiciary’s efforts, emphasizing that unlocking capital is vital for economic activity. He proposed extending mediation windows, streamlining consent judgment execution, and standardizing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) clauses in financial contracts to make mediation the default rather than a negotiated concession.
Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, reinforced the message that mediation is a powerful tool for delivering accessible and business-friendly justice. She noted that each settled case represents not just a closed dispute but also strengthened commercial relationships and facilitated forward movement for businesses. The judiciary acknowledged the lessons learned from the drive and committed to institutionalizing best practices to extend the spirit of mediation beyond dedicated sessions.
