Journalist Gideon Tugume Apologises to Gen. Muhoozi After Detention

Journalist and lawyer Gideon Tugume has issued a public apology to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, after his recent release from a two-week detention. Tugume, who was arrested earlier this month, had made remarks on Radio 4 questioning General Muhoozi’s biological relation to President Yoweri Museveni and suggested a DNA test.

During a follow-up appearance on the same radio station, Tugume retracted his statements, expressing deep respect for General Muhoozi and his parents, and asked for forgiveness. He explained that his controversial comments stemmed from intense personal and financial pressures that clouded his judgment.

Tugume detailed facing significant struggles in providing for his four children, including difficulties in meeting their educational and daily needs. He also highlighted his prolonged period of unemployment despite holding multiple degrees and a diploma, expressing fears of retiring without significant achievements.

Adding to his hardships, Tugume revealed he is battling several serious illnesses, including diabetes, cancer, and ulcers, which have exacerbated his financial challenges. He recounted a recent hospital admission where he struggled to clear a medical bill, requiring a fundraiser to assist him.

Tugume appealed directly to General Muhoozi for financial assistance, sharing his difficult circumstances and seeking help to overcome his predicaments. His apology marks the end of a case that garnered considerable public attention.
